Frequently Asked Questions
-
Home physiotherapy is a service provided in the patient's home, where the physiotherapist assesses, treats, and monitors the individual's progress within their own environment. This approach is particularly beneficial for those with mobility difficulties, people recovering from injury or surgery, or anyone who prefers a more convenient and personalised service. Sessions take place in the patient's home, with all necessary equipment provided by the physiotherapist, ensuring comfort, convenience, and tailored care.
-
Home physiotherapy may be suitable for people experiencing pain, movement limitations, post-surgical recovery, falls, frailty, neurological conditions, respiratory issues, or difficulty leaving home. It is also valuable in functional rehabilitation, active ageing, and post-hospitalisation recovery.
-
The first session begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment, during which the physiotherapist identifies the patient's concerns, medical history, goals, and functional limitations. Based on this assessment, an individualised treatment plan is developed, taking into account the person's environment (home, workplace, and surrounding outdoor environment).
-
In general, home physiotherapy sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes. However, the duration may vary depending on the clinical needs and type of intervention. The initial assessment session is usually longer.
-
The number of sessions depends on the condition being treated, the stage of recovery, the individual's response to treatment, and the goals established. Following the initial assessment, a treatment plan will be agreed upon.
-
In most cases, yes. Our physiotherapists have the training and experience required to provide specialist assessments and effective treatments. When necessary, they will refer patients to other healthcare professionals or specialties. Home-based treatment can often be advantageous, as it allows rehabilitation to take place within the individual's real-life environment, making it easier to adapt strategies to everyday activities.
-
Generally, all that is required is a comfortable and safe space with enough room to move around, as well as a stable chair or sofa if possible. If there are any specific requirements, the physiotherapist will inform you beforehand.
-
In most cases, a family member or caregiver is welcome to attend, particularly if this helps with organisation, safety, or continuity of the rehabilitation programme at home. In some situations, their involvement can be especially beneficial in reinforcing guidance between sessions.
